Talent is universal, but opportunity is not.

Inequity is baked into the American education system. Here in the Philadelphia area, a child’s zip code correlates directly with the quality of educational opportunities they receive. And pandemic-related learning loss is still having a disproportionate impact on students in low-income school districts. So much talent is being lost! Horizons Greater Philadelphia gives hundreds of kids the chance to spend their summers on an independent school campus, opening their eyes to new possibilities. In 2024, about 400 Kindergarten through 8th-grade students spent their summers at our four partner schools: Episcopal Academy, Greene Street Friends School, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, and Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School. The program is designed to keep them coming back year after year. Students take part in small-group reading and math instruction, challenging STEM projects, and meaningful field trips that expand their worldview. They learn to swim, they play and learn outdoors, and they participate in sports, the arts, drama, and music. Students also learn how to manage their emotions, build relationships, and make positive decisions. And they become part of a year-round Horizons community. Best of all: There is no cost to families, and transportation and meals are provided. Research shows that Horizons works. Over 6 weeks each summer, students in our programs gain anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks in their math, reading, and literacy skills. They’re more likely to attend school regularly, and they perform better in and out of the classroom. Your gift of $3,600 today means that one child can attend Horizons Greater Philadelphia programming during summer 2025.
